The Hour of Code

  • Richmond Public Library - Main Branch 101 East Franklin Street, 2nd Floor Richmond, VA, 23219 United States (map)

Experience Level: Beginner - Experienced

Recommended Ages: 5-99

Description: Whether your child has never seen a line of code, or already has their own app in the App Store, there will be an activity here for them. We will provide you with many different options for self-paced learning and exploration of code and coding concepts. Like Robots you can code either with your computer screen or magic markers? We'll have those too!

This is a great way to "try out" the Dojo if you've never done coding before.

There will be options for a very wide variety of ages and levels of experience including some programming options favorable to early/pre-readers. This will not be a lecture but a self guided session with tools and mentors to help guide you through the experience.

We will have experienced, professional programmers as mentors available during the "Hour of Code" to offer suggestions and help you if you get stuck. As always in the Coder Dojo, we will encourage the participants to help each other out as well. We often learn best by teaching others.

Computer requirement: If at all possible, please bring your own laptop. We will have computers available as loaners on a first come, first serve basis and there might be a few other laptops available as loaners, but those are not guaranteed.

Most of the tools we will be using in this session require either no installation on your laptop (just a decent web browser) or installations that are very easy to remove so don't be afraid to let your kids use your laptop for an hour.

Please RSVP to this session so we can get a headcount and make sure we have a good mentor to coder ratio. Use the "Additional Guest" for any additional children. Parents do not require a registration.

Parents are required to remain with their child during the session. You may not "drop off" your child.
